I am hooked on great Sushi restaurants. Wherever I go I seek them out and take great joy in comparing their cuisine to my all-time favorite Sushi restaurants, Minami, in Sedona, Arizona, as well as Sushi on Oracle in Tucson. Both of these single-owner sushi restaurants are beyond beyond in quality, atmosphere, and sincere mastery in the art of sushi. In this rarified realm of tip-top, Yama is my top Manhattan choice. Yamas food is worth any wait you might have to endure in order to get seated. The time when you arrive really affects the wait time, yet like Alice in Wonderland, you cannot know when the best time actually is for getting seated quickly. Forget your previous training and just imagine how deeply satisfying your delightful Japanese meal will be and leave it at that. After one meal here youll forget about waiting forever. Visualize Sushi Satori...

Yama has fresh fish and good sushi at relatively reasonable prices - thats why you go. That said, its incredibly cramped, with tables about 1 foot apart (youll feel like youre dining family-style with strangers; the bonus is that you might make some new friends). The ceilings are also low, so if you have claustrophobia, definitely do not go here. Also, the waitstaff is borderline rude, so if youre sensitive, this is not the place for you. If you want quality sushi and dont care about the atmosphere (or like crowds), this is a good spot for you. Somehow my friend and I keep coming back -- I guess were gluttons for punishment. That being said, I think the novelty has worn off for me.

Very high quality sushi and very tasty. Not the place to be for a solo excursion, however. Service was not very welcoming, except by the person who served me, and while he was nice, he wasnt a great English speaker and so wasnt very helpful when I asked him questions. Be prepared to pay a good amount of money to be satisfied, since the sushi rolls, while very big, arent enough to satisfy on their own. It feels like a great place for working professionals or a group of friends to hang out, but dont be fooled into thinking this is a good place to go and get value for when you just want a decent meal.

This has been my go to sushi spot for over 10 years now. It is an unassuming little neighborhood spot in the basement of a town home once inhabited by Washington Irving. The fish is always fresh, and the sushi rice is perfect. The green tea tempura ice cream is one of the best desserts in all of Manhattan. Service is friendly enough, and any shortcomings are more than made up for once you are gobbling down your fish. Get there early or expect to wait. On your way home take a stroll north on Irving Place for a "never gets tired" view of the Chrysler Building.

My favorite sushi place in the neighborhood, good quality and competitive prices. The space is limited so it may happen that you have to wait a little bit, especially during "rush hour". This is a no frills restaurant, decor is very minimal and service is ok. If you are looking for a fancy gourmet sushi place this is not the right choice for you. But if you want to spend some time with your friends and have some good sushi, this is the perfect destination for your informal dinner.

Yama is the best place for one reason [only reason] everthing there toooooo good , when you leave the place in your stomach felt so good yummy feeling. If you asked me why? I ate soo many places didnt compares with Yama and worth with the normal price, if you go to nubo[ the best] 10 time more expensive. Guess what 50 % of the customers are Asian [they know where to go] I ate there for 20 years, cant get over with their flavor, too fresh elegant place........

RUDE RUDE RUDE. Absolutely horrible service. This place acts as though customers have to measure up to their standards. I went there for lunch, and one of my orders tasted and smelled funny, so I said something to the sushi chef. In response he shouted at me. It was disgusting. There is no way anyone should ever be yelled at by a place that expects customers to pay good money.

I really enjoyed coming here for dinner. Place is in a basement, a bit hidden but very well organized inside and clean, cozy and they make very well use of space. Menu could use and update, however the special and "very special" rolls are very good. The mango salmon roll melts in your mouth, delicious! Would definitely come back if Im in the area.

Maybe a bit pricey but one of the best sushi restaurants I have tried. Youll be probably crammed in a corner though as the space between tables is limited. Also service could be improved: the man who welcomed us was really nice but cant say the same about the waitress who served us. Good quality food Id recommend to anyone who like sushi.

the sashimi is incredibly large, i mean these pieces of fish could easily equal like 5-6 pieces of sashimi at another restaurant. If you like spicy then this is the place too because there spicy sauce is much better than most places. only negative is that theyre located in a tight spot but it doesnt stop me from going there.

The sushi here was pretty good. The place is a bit small and might be hard to spot at first since it is downstairs. I would make a reservation first so you do not have to wait. The rolls are pretty substantial or you can order sushi/sashimi a la carte. I would recommend the mango salmon roll.

Until yesterday, I thought the best place in the workd to eat sushi outside of Japan was Alexs in Oslo. Today I now believe it is Yama on 17th Street in New York!!! If you at all like sushi you must try it and the proces are very reasonable for the quality of food you are getting!

Low key underground sushi spot near Gramercy Park. Lunchtime sushi box of nigiri, maki and sashimi was so big that I had trouble finishing. Contrary to previous reviewers, I found the service quite nice and the quality to price ratio very favorable. Would definitely come again.

AMAZING SUSHI!!! By far some of the best sushi I have had in the city. Granted I can do some work on the all-you-can-eat locations, but this is amazing. I ordered a bunch of rolls and the dumplings and was still jealous of other peoples rolls as they looked just as good.

Best sushi !! I explored this place and addicted since 2014 ! Local, no reservation accepted. But you dont wait too long. I prefer to sit at the sushi bar and watch how serious they prepare those plates :) And reasonable price .. Try jalapeno specials .. Love it.

Fruit flies buzzing around my much anticipated sushi meal. The rainbow roll, chewy whitefish with reddish brown tuna in the center. Whoever rated this place before me was either from the Midwest or blind and suffering from anosmia.

A bit pricey. Quality was just fine. Rolls were thick and hard to handle to be honest. Decor is ok. Nothing bad about this place, there just isnt anything to give it that 5 star rating. Service was very good and attentive.
