I called in the order for pick up and got the price beforehand but when I arrived the girl at the counter tried to charge me extra for my order when the receipt was already printed bearing the price. When I walked in she was looking at me with disgust and when she told me a higher price I told her no thats not the correct price and pointed to the ticket on my order. She just got a bad attitude and punched in a new order on the computer screen and proceeded to get the higher amount saying that I am wrong. I told her that I am not paying that amount for the food because whatever she is looking at is not my ticket and she rolled her eyes and said just give me what you have. I told her I have the exact amount that is on the ticket in front of our very eyes. She counted the money and then again got a very bad attitude saying the price was more. She was becoming furious and workers from the back were coming out. A guy from the back asked what was wrong and she told him very passively and he immediately said it was okay. She switched up and faked being polite as if she was doing me a favor but she was really trying to rip me off and act like she didnt speak english when I told her she is wrong. I didnt like having to argue with the girl just because she was trying to rip me off and I wish I would have just left because the food wasnt very good anyway. The girl at the counter is obviously racist and emotionally disturbed because no one else in the store acted as horrid as she did. She was acting as if she was going to lose her mind and was very disrespectful compared to the other workers. The food was greasy and salty and not seasoned as well as other indian restaurants I have been to. The prices on the online menu also dont match the prices of the store so beware.

While Minar is above par in the Times Square area, when it comes to Indian food it really isnt saying much. Ive lived down the block (Hells kitchen) for 6 years now and really the best Indian food is either on 6th street or 28th and Lex area. That said, Minar is decent but the restaurant itself is worse than half the places Ive been to in impoverished areas of India. When you sit and eat there the thought of catching hepatitis or cholera crosses ones mind. That or bed bugs. Its filthy on a good day. So looking in you would immediately just turn around and leave. The food- Like most other Indian restaurants all the food for the day is made "en mass". Nothing is made fresh to order. Probably all the sauces are from big cans or tubs. Sometimes the saag paneer has a taste of ammonia or chemical which is really gross. This place used to be a real gem but not so much lately. I used to go for the lunch specials. Their coriander chicken used to be excellent but I ordered last week and the chicken tasted really horrible. Like dog food would. Its too bad cause I really liked the family that works there (of course in the kitchen are Mexican cheaper labor) The food is served out of big trays on steam heaters like in a deli. Sadly most of them are at the temp very close where bacteria can grow. If you call for delivery their hours listed are WRONG. You have to order an hour before the closing time. I live three blocks away. All they have to do is spoon already made food into a container, bag it up and deliver it. I called 45 min before closing time and they refused to take my order. Sorry Minar but really time to get your act together.

While having lunch at their other location on 31st St, near 5th Ave, I spoke with another diner who explained why the place is so popular with Indians. He said that, unlike the other Indian restaurants, the food tastes like the food in India. I was delighted to discover this location on 46th St., very near Times Square. It is an extremely modest little place that is easy to walk by without noticing, but it has a faithful following because the food is cheap and excellent. I am reluctant to say this publicly since it is a bit of a secret treasure, but I was shocked at the absurdly low score it received. I suspect the negative reviews are a combination of reviews from competitors and those who find the food and/or service a culture shock. Dont be intimidated, it is excellent.

I really liked my Chicken Mekhani (Buttered Chicken). The onion kulcha was a little soggy. The portion was filling for me with the chicken, rice and separate bread which is to say it might be too much food for most people. The price was cheap if you dont order bread; with bread it was still reasonable. The line at lunch moves very quickly so know what you want as a fall-back before you get there and scan the line when you queue up to see if something catches your eye. My coworker ordered lamb saag and naan which wasnt on the line but it was ready for him about the same time my onion kulcha was finished. Fast, good and more than enough food to satisfy. Id like to try a dosa but Im not sure how easy that would be to order at lunch.

I went for lunch here on April 24th, 2010. The food tasted ok to below average. I personally found the food and spread of Indus Express (located nearby: near Rockefeller Centre) to be much better and much more value for money. While paying for my food, they charged my credit card twice. I would have given them the benefit of the doubt had both the amounts been same, but the amounts were different which makes me believe it was deliberate. The store was almost empty when i visited so this makes it look all the more worse because such things are possible if the place is overcrowded. This is cheating and I will never go to this place again. I would advise people to be watchful while paying if they decide to go.

I generally liked the food there, its pretty close to Bengali / North Indian cooking. The first few times they didnt skimp on the food, and didnt overly worry about how much they were giving. These last two times I got EXTREMELY overly measured quantity, and not enough food for the price tag they want to put on it. Its not bad food at all -- not fantastic either though -- but the service, and the measured doling out of the quantity of food me upset and aggravated enough to scratch this place off my list -- even after I asked for more, it was like one or two peas extra, and some curry. Come on folks, dont be that cheap. AVOID this place. Dont get upset with the service, just dont go there.

Authentic Indian food for less than $10 right next to the Times Square? I thought it was a joke at first, but then realized it was true. All the negative reviews posted by people here are probably because of the fact that the food is not presented in a proper fashion. This is a cafeteria-style restaurant, so this place has zero ambiance, and food is served only in paper plates. People who might want to try exotic Indian food with lots of spices might return disappointed, as the food served here is very much similar to a home-cooked meal. If you want a decent Indian meal to quench your appetite without your wallet being hurt, this IS the place!!!
