This is set up kind of like a fast food place, where you get in line, order, then pick up your tray of food and find your own seat. The decor feels to me like someones home in the 1970s (I was born in 1984). It gives a consistent and authentic feeling vibe, albeit one that I dont really like. Now that the trivial stuff is out of the way, I will say that every piece of food here is magnificent. The chicken is great, the sides are great (cheesy fried mashed potatoes, mac and cheese). The Texas tenders are a solid order, three large perfect tenders. The cold sides are all great. Desserts are all great. They have reasonably priced beers and even some wine tetra-packs. Hm, what else? Oh yes, the deep fried pimento cheese sandwich. It is a small cheese sandwich (probably on regular white bread) entirely battered and deep fried. Not sure where else you can order something like that. As a final note, I have been here for lunch dozens of times as I work nearby, but only last weekend went for breakfast. I had the eggs armadillo, which is served in a bowl-like container. At the bottom of the container is placed a half biscuit (their biscuits are excellent also). On top of the bottom half of the biscuit is placed a poached egg. Gravy is poured everywhere, the biscuit top is placed, and more gravy is poured on. Quite delicious.

As a native Texan, I loooovvveee places that remind me of the good ol South. Hill Country does just that with its chicken biscuit breakfast sandwiches, its breakfast tacos, its juicy fried chicken, its delectable pies and its Mozarts Coffee (Austin, represent!). I heard a rumor that the owner of both Hill Country Chicken and Hill Country Barbecue was a University of Texas alum, which makes me even more loyal to the place (us Longhorns have to stick together). I love bringing my coworkers here and eating downstairs in what feels like your aunts basement (we didnt have basements in Texas so Im only using my imagination here). We love to smother our chicken in the hot sauce and honey provided and just go all out until one person is left crunching on the carcasses. At this point, we feel a little disgusted and turn our attention to getting one of their mini pies. The banana cream pie is the best! Its light and creamy and just perfect for a little dessert. Trust me, Ive tried almost every pie for Pi Day (hey! I just wanted to do my due diligence!). Hmmm... I wonder whod be up for fried chicken this Friday...

Place presents itself in a Country style fried chicken fast food / Texas diner. Based on my customer experience, ordering stage is rushy and girl at the counter interrupted me twice while I was making my order. I wasnt finished with my order that she asked me to move beside to ask to her colleague about sides or drinks. Prices in general are expensive, but I think you pay also for the brand. I ordered a slice of pie and they told me wasnt available unless I buy a whole pie, so they showed me their mini pie cup @3.5 $ (I think are overpriced although they are really good). Price wise dont go for hot honey sandwich $8.50 because is small portion. Salads are a better choice because generous and starting at $9.75 . Coffee is percolated and it is decent, but costs 2.5$ . you can have outside for 1.50$ The environment is particularly noisy, with music aloud and people talking, plus staff shouting names. Not a relaxing environment. To sum up, a place to try if you are in New York, but for me just once as American Food Experience.

As a place to get some work done, Hill Country isnt bad. Its a big place with seating upstairs and down. Downstairs there are cushy booths and plenty of room. When there arent kids its even pretty quiet. Beware TVs, though. Upstairs its usually loud. Best times to come and work are weekday late morning through the afternoon. The upstairs gets busy around lunch, though usually with grab and go folks. The people who stay tend to be upstairs. There is free Wi-Fi here. It can be slow. If youre in the downstairs your phone/hotspot might not get a good signal, so be aware. So all that is a solid 3.5 stars as a place to work, right? As a place to eat: hell to the no. Its not the the food isnt good. It is. The chicken is just ridiculously, grossly, abominably overpriced. The chicken is not THAT good. Come on. So, if you plan to eat here, I say order a pie or a side dish or something small, a fountain drink, and then live off of Boylans all day.

Worst thing to be true is when the sides are better than the fried chicken - this was definitely 100% valid at Hill Country. The chicken pieces were not that special without any spice or flavor. Definitely go for the classic instead of the mama El - visually they look so alike, but classic is the way to take. I loved their cheesy mashed potato though! That was one of the favs and I wish I ordered a bigger one for that instead of getting the chicken. The hot honey chicken wich was also not that special - it was neither spicy or hot. The bun was ice cold against a lukewarm piece of chicken. Price would be outrageous for that kind of quality. Though, I enjoyed that the staff were nice and did let us stick around even after our meal on a cold sunday night. Theres a restroom thats on the side towards your left when you enter. Theres also the hand sanitizer wipes if youre concerned to using your hands to eat!

This used to be a wonderful place and perhaps it still is - but my visit tonight (3/26/17) was a complete dismal failure. I was looking forward to some wonderful fried chicken and a flaky biscuit. Ive had such a meal at Hill Country before. But what I got was over salted, not very good chicken and a biscuit that was salty, small, hard and stale. Then there was the wait to pay - although there were people hanging around, one person making a milk shake (was supposed to make two) and others avoiding the eyes of those that were trying to pay finally someone looked at me and said "are you trying to pay?" No Im just standing patiently by the cash register staring at you - what a stupid question. Anyway, I finally overpaid for the dinner I got and left others still waiting to pay - Someone needs to pay attention or this is going to be another shuttered restaurant in NYC.

I cant speak to the food, but what is up with the service here? After walking by this place last night, I was looking forward to trying it. I was so excited to get some fried chicken, biscuits and a tiny pie for lunch after a week of soup and salad. I called and asked if I could put in an order for pick up, and the lady on the phone just responded with, "Uh, no." It was really awkward. After a long pause she said that they just started doing delivery and they are "phasing out pick-up." She then said I could just come down and get the food, that theres only about a 12 minute wait for food. Sorry, lady, I dont have all day for lunch, I only have 30 minutes. It was already a bit of a schlep to get there, so not everybody has 10+ minutes to wait around for lunch. I really dont get why a place like this wouldnt offer take out. All I wanted was chicken and pie :(
