Gyu Kaku is a love of mine. Theres something about cooking your own food and controlling the pace of the meal that I really like. Coupled with reasonable prices and a great happy hour and its hard to resist. This was my first visit to this location, typically I go to the Times Square one. This location is much smaller than the times square one and feels much more cramped. Otherwise everything seems pretty similar. We got the Fuji course for 2 which at the time they were running a special for $35. We also had the tuna volcano rolls to start which were like a massive fried piece of sushi with a ton of tuna on top. They were pretty good and we all enjoyed it. We also got the calamari which was decent, though nothing special. The meats were all very good as usual. Ive never had any issues with freshness. We added a couple bistro hanger steaks which is probably my favorite cut here. It wasnt as tender as I remember but still good. For desert we had smores which are always a crowd pleaser. Pitchers of beer were only $10 and nigori sake was $8 which was a great deal. We waited a little while before our server came but once there everything was super quick and attentive. Getting more drinks and food wasnt an issue at all and our grill was changed out frequently. If theres one thing I can say about Gyu Kaku its that its a consistently good experience and its relatively inexpensive for what you get.

There is just something about Japanese barbecue that I love especially the type that you have to cook yourself. This restaurant never has a wait when I go to it, however this is usually on the off-peak hours. As I said, this is one of my favorite places to go. The food is really good and if you go during happy hour you can get a lot of food for a great price. The last time I went I got for meat dishes a vegetable dish and a soda for $30. You get to sit at a table with a grill and cook the meat yourself this is quite an experience especially For Tourists. If you are a tourist and have never done this before, make sure to find someone who has done it before and have them show you. If you do not know anybody, then asked the wait staff they will be glad to help you. Japanese restaurants, as you will find, are very polite when you answer everybody greets you the waiter announces that youve arrived and everybody responds. It is really fun.

If you want to do something different like cooking your own meal in a NY restaurant, this is the place! Starting with a happy hour almost every day of the week, you wait for your table (that is a real challenge, not aproppiate if you are starving) with a $8 USD jar of japanesse beer for later choose between a long variety of different meat cuts, chicken and sea food, finishing with the main desert (that I cant remember the name) hot marshmallows, cookies and chocolates, everything in a delicious sandwich. For a 2 person dinner there are different combos, the one I selected was the $70 USD option, it had everything for the complete experience. The bad - Long time waiting list - Its a very hidden place - Theres not a big variety on drinks The good - Great food experience - Good prices - Great for big groups or just a couple dinner - Good attention from the waitresses - HAPPY HOUR! Almost every day of the week

This place used to be good. Now it is the worst Japanese restaurant in the neighborhood when it comes to food. Most of the customers are not Japanese (a huge red flag in midtown Manhattan). They are Chinese or Caucasian tourists or new non-Japanese transplants to NYC. Japanese customers seem to avoid this place. I should have done so as well. Pork belly smells like rotting pig carcass. Hanger steak and Kalbi chuck specials are chewy like leather. Regular priced beef cuts are not as chewy but taste old & smell terrible when you chew. All three sauces are extremely sweet. Do NOT bother with this place. There are plenty of better places in the neighborhood. The waitresses and waiters were attentive and the manager was nice enough to take off three of the truly objectionable cuts of meat from the check. So the service is good but the food is not edible.

I like tried location over the one in the east village. This is on the second floor with high ceilings and big glass windows so you can see the other buildings nearby. You may want to make a reservation as it can get busy and you may but not be offered seating. I like the option for 2 forb $70. There are two options from each of the sections of appetizers and meats. I like the Salmon with seaweed and avocado. I like the meats with the marinades. They bring the meats to your table and you grill the meats yourself. I suggest you separate the thongs - one for putting raw meats on the grill and other to grab meats when done to avoid contamination. I like this type of Japanese BBQ and slightly different from the Korean BBQ.

I hit this restaurant with a friend for lunch and made it for happy hour! AWESOME! Everything was 1/2 off including the drinks! We had 6 meats, a Shrimp Cocktail, 2 Mojitos, 2 sodas, Garlic Chicken Noodles (Must have), Green Tea Crepe (Must Have) and with 20% tip, our check came to $70! What? All that food and drinks in NYC? NEVER! Yep! It happened. The meats are all prime cuts, too! Best part, the food was AMAZING! The service was outstanding. The atmosphere was fun and energetic! We had such a good time cooking our meats in the pit of the table. It was incredible. This is definitely my favorite of the three locations in Manhattan! I will definitely return and I have already recommended it to many!

We go to Gyu-kaku every other week (its our favorite restaurant) however the servers here are very rude. They dont ever smile and seem to be running around when theres not many people to serve. A particular server, Ken, was very argumentative and disrespectful. I will ensure to go to gyu kaku when after his shift (post 5pm). The manager is quite nice and takes care of things. Wish she would manage her servers to learn to smile and make the place more comforting! Other gyu kakus in manhanttan are tons better in service. Food can be great on a dice roll of the chef.

Love! Love this place. A little smaller than the East Village location and a little more upscale in customers, catering to the late 20s and up crowd. The menu too is slightly higher end in some items but still the same great BBQ youd expect from any Gyu-Kaku. Service is prompt and the staff well trained and knowledgeable. Outdoor seating available as well and a small bar with seating by the windows to wait for tables or just for quick small bites and drink. There is a private space in the back for large parties were the tradition is shoes off...

Went here for dinner with colleagues. There were 9 of us so we decided to do two of the course menus; the meat lovers and Kandou. These were more than enough as the food kept on coming. The service was great as they were attentive and removed our empty plates swiftly. We had two grills to use to cook our food. Unfortunately, one of the grills for some reason would only cook on a small section of the grill instead of the whole thing. So cooking our food took a little longer. Other than that, food was great and would recommend people try it out!
