I went there 3 times, once with a friend, once to get carry out, and once alone. Ive learned a few things from my experience. 1. At least for me, never tip. Or at least at first( in situations when you pay with a card, which I almost exclusively do). Every time Ive done it, the first time and the third time, Ive regretted it. The first time, after taking extra long with my order--as my friend who I was right after in line and who got more than I, got his food a good 15 minutes before me, after they pushed through a few other orders between us-- my order was wrong. The third time, my order came out horrible burnt(black) and practically inedible. Lesson learned. 2. The service is OK, as long as you dont mind the slight air of superiority that comes with a smile. I usually roll my eyes at that. 3. The food, when correct and not burned, is very delicious. Which is why I gave them a second and third time. 4. I feel like you need a certain attitude here. I was taught to always be nice and gracious to others but I think here you need to be just a slight bit more... aloof? I guess is the best way to put it. I used to work in food service so I tried to understand that they were busy the first day and things can get kind of crazy and mixed up. But the third (and final) time I could not extend the same courtesy. I went because my friend raved about it and he knows I love food. And if I love your food I will give you all the monies. Though the food is good most of the time I can not recommend a place on a 33% success rate. After the third and very unsatisfying meal I went right to Brooklyn and Cafe Madeleine. El Rey has pretty tasty food but so do other places.

El Rey has recently voted one of the most Instagrammed coffee shops in the world, so we had to go. Its in a fun part of NYC and slightly bigger than your usual coffee shop. They serve brunch as well so its crowded on a weekend morning. The coffee is quality as are the pastries. In the very back, theres a simple neon sign that says "El Rey." Thats what people Instagram. Its cool, but definitely not note worthy. Regardless, if youre in the area, stop by!

SUPER CUTE!!! I definitely approve the vibes from this cafe. The decor makes you so relaxed and the staff members are chill. The open windows really make a positive difference as well as the Bassanova playlist. I APPROVE HIGHLY. However, they definitely have to get a new water dispenser -- the thing drips water like 1 drip per minute. Order a coffee, sit by the window with a nice book. BAM. Ultimate relaxation.

We stopped in on a freezing, snowy day for lunch and filled up on a huge bowl of vegan kale soup and a plate of frittata. Wed heard about the coffee but the food was outstanding. The soup broth had a hint of citrus and the chef explained that he added orange slices to the pan at the start. It was subtle but surprising and delightful. The portions are generous for the reasonable prices.

This place is brilliant whenever my friends and I head there. Its a bit small, so be prepared to get cosy. Staff here are always friendly and attentive, and they have plenty of healthy food options. As a side note, I left my wallet at this place once, and the staff were kind enough to locate it and return it to me. You dont find this level of kindness often in NYC!

Yum. Ive only ever been here for lunch and I always end up getting the same thing - grain salad with crudités and an iced Mexican mocha topped with fresh mint. The food is all killer no filler. El Rey is my happy place on a day off from work. Small, nobody bothers me, and I can sit at the counter with my book eating incredible and perfectly portioned food.

Perhaps I was expecting more. I wanted to like this place more than how I felt going in given the vibe and reviews. Food service was slow (one cook preparing one dish at a time) and the dish I got did not taste balanced -- high on the acidity level to the point of hard to eat. As a consolation, it was beautifully composed.

Contemporary, inventive fare, done mostly with plants! Dont get me wrong, its not good vegetarian food, its just good food. Loved the chicarrones, the green mole burrata and the charred radiccio, and from someone who isnt really into super sweet desserts, the caramel goat cheese toast at the end is fabulous.

Im sad that this place is so popular now. Great for them, but not great for me. :( Fresh food, lots of veggie options, great coffee, wine, beer, and teas. Love the deconstructed falafel, the avocado del sur, and did I mention the excellent coffee? Come here for a laid back LA vibe (if its not packed).

Super sweet staff, super good food! Poached eggs, Avo pita, and some seasonal drinks all top notch! Lime, Shiso Agua Fresca pictured here was refreshing and tasty! Really love that they serve Parlor Coffee as well. Juicy, bright, espresso shots mmm Cold Brew outside on a cold day feels gooooood.

Tasty little cantina serving up modern eclectic greenmarket dishes. Casual and tiny, four seats at the counter facing out onto Stanton street, a few more tables inside. Nice espresso drinks. Dishes are small and light, not terribly filling but quite tasty. Many vegan options.

This is one of my favorite places to stop by for a casual brunch and coffee on the weekend. The menu is just perfect, and the food itself is as beautiful as it is delicious. The coffee is great, too. El Rey is exactly the kind of place I would want to open myself.

Over priced , A condescending attitude and the quality of the prodact is low. I ordered the hot chocolate , after they promissed me its really special ,well ,i got warm milk with some syrup in it , with no taste . I told them and they just didnt care .

Cute, small place with people coming and going. Best biscotti I ever had, along with the best cortado. Theyre putting in a kitchen, which will be accessible to the public, and have beer now. A diamond in the rough. Check then it before they become cool.

Cute, small space with just a few communal high tables and some counter seats. Featured in Aziz Ansaris Master of None! Great California-style healthy fare. Saw quite a few people come in for the Mexican mocha. The avocado with flatbread was delicious!

Tiny location thats a solid brunch option in the LES. A lot of nutritious options on the menu and everything is so colorful and delicious. Be prepared to wait for a seat if rolling out of bed at noon like a lot of us New Yorkers. Love the pickled eggs!

Bon café. Les viennoiseries sont correctes. Petit café new yorkais un peu hipstet, typique du lower east end

Perfect coffee shop: friendly staff; excellent winter specialties like the hot cider and brownie butter hot chocolate; and guests who arent afraid to strike up conversation. Wish I lived close enough to make this a regular spot for me.
